Commemorating Black August

Black August is a time of remembrance, reflection, and resistance. It began in the 1970s within the California penal system, initiated by incarcerated Black activists who sought to honor the memory and sacrifices of those who fought for Black liberation. The observance of Black August has grown over the decades, becoming an important period for the Black community to reflect on its history and continue the struggle for justice and equality.

Origins in the California Penal System

Black August was conceived by Black political prisoners in California, specifically those involved in the Black Liberation Movement. The movement gained momentum following the deaths of prominent figures like George Jackson, a revolutionary activist and member of the Black Panther Party. Jackson was killed by prison guards on August 21, 1971, in San Quentin Prison under suspicious circumstances, marking a pivotal moment in the creation of Black August.

Empowering Mobility for Our Elders

This #GivingTuesday, we invite you to join Liberate Our Elders in our mission to uplift and honor our elders. We are raising funds to provide a wheelchair-accessible van, which will ensure safe and reliable transportation for elders who have faced systemic challenges and isolation. This vehicle will be essential in restoring their independence, dignity, and connection to the community.

Your donation will have a direct and meaningful impact on the lives of these elders, providing them with the mobility and respect they deserve. Together, we can bring hope and transformation to those who have given so much but have received so little in return.

Let’s work together to ensure that our elders are celebrated, supported, and empowered.
