Black August is a time of remembrance, reflection, and resistance. It began in the 1970s within the California penal system, initiated by incarcerated Black activists who sought to honor the memory and sacrifices of those who fought for Black liberation. The observance of Black August has grown over the decades, becoming an important period for the Black community to reflect on its history and continue the struggle for justice and equality.
Origins in the California Penal System
Black August was conceived by Black political prisoners in California, specifically those involved in the Black Liberation Movement. The movement gained momentum following the deaths of prominent figures like George Jackson, a revolutionary activist and member of the Black Panther Party. Jackson was killed by prison guards on August 21, 1971, in San Quentin Prison under suspicious circumstances, marking a pivotal moment in the creation of Black August.
